June 9th marked my 29th birthday. This year I had a great birthday. On the day itself I had to work. The morning was so busy, in fact the busiest it’s been for some time, but it was good to be kept occupied although it was pretty relentless and some of the people I spoke to were so miserable.
For lunch our manager took us out to a local restaurant. Drinking a beer at 11:30am is no new thing but having it paid for by your boss, that was a first. A simple lunch and beer, followed by a couple of quick phone calls home and I was back in the saddle ready for work again.
In the afternoon the tempo dropped somewhat which was a welcome relief. By the end of the day everything was winding down and it was time to actually celebrate. A friend of mine took me out for pie and coffee. On Davie Street there is beautiful pie and bread shop called Tartine Bread & Pies. It’s a small, really welcoming cafe with a great selection of pies. I have been there a few times over the last few months and absolutely love them. Pie and coffee was a great way to celebrate and I felt quite content on my way home.
On Friday the party and celebrating really started. I was at work during the day but come the evening it was straight down to Mohony & Sons in Canada Place for a few beers. Sitting by the water watching the sea planes take off and land with the backdrop of the North Shore mountains, there’s not much that can beat it for views. What was quite amusing was some of the mountains were still snow capped, which is crazy considering it’s now mid-June.
Once the majority of people had arrived at the bar it was off for dinner. I have been craving a good meat feast and felt what better way to get it than go to a Brazilian restaurant specialising in BBQ meats.
Rio Brazilian Steakhouse reminds me very much of a favourite restaurant of mine in Nottingham, Tropeiro, where I lived for the last few years before moving to Canada. Rio Brazilian Steakhouse prides itself on having only Brazilian waiters and waitresses. Unbeknownst to me they also have Brazilian dancers who come on throughout the evening to perform. They are dressed in traditional outfits and performing traditional dances. It was quite a performance and naturally I had to have my photo taken with them!
Although going to Rio was not cheap it was a great evening and I was surrounded by some of my best friends. After a thoroughly good feed at Rio we were all rather fat and full but in the spirit of celebrating we headed back to a friends place for a beer before calling it a night. It was really chilled and made a perfect end to the evening.
As a present to myself I decided the celebrating wasn’t going to stop after 2 days so I booked myself a massage. I’ve had a Groupon voucher for ages that I have been meaning to use and I figured what better time than now, especially as it’s been 9 months since I last had a massage. The spa itself didn’t look much on the outside but the massage was amazing. I’m pretty sure the masseuse found every knot on my back and worked them out because afterwards the party was most definitely over. For the next 36 hours I spent over 20 of them fast asleep. Naps were not 20 minutes long but 5 hours and tiredness kicked in at an all time high. By this point I really didn’t care and spending some time pampering myself was exactly what I needed. It was the perfect end to one of the best birthday’s I have had.
For the next year I have no idea what’s in store. I am excited, intrigued and looking forward to seeing what the year brings. I am determined to make the final year of my 20’s a year to remember…getting my Perminent Residence status would certainly be a good way to go. Keep posted to see how the application goes later in the year.
